Chicago Production

As if we couldn’t get enough of jazz era criminals after Bugsy Malone, Chicago came roaring into the Drama studio last week. The joint production of Year 11 and Year 13 BTEC students was a blistering performance of song and dance that truly showcased the talent and potential that Kingswood students have.

The show details the trials (literally) and tribulations of Roxy Hart and Velma Kelly as they try to avoid the hangman’s noose for murders of passion whilst also trying to find fame in the jazz clubs of Chicago. Niamh Kennedy and Katie Edgar played the roles with passion and verve, but were by no means the only high points in a great ensemble rounded out by Meg Lyons as Billy Flynn, Stacey Hewett as Mama Morton and Hannah Reynolds as Mary Sunshine.  Craig Macphee deserves special mention for his turn as downtrodden Amos, bringing huge empathy to the role.

The choreography was as strong as ever, with all the cast strutting their stuff with an energy and commitment worthy of a far bigger stage.  Yet it was the singing that really stood out, with voices being heard that have seemingly been hidden for the last six and a half years! We really have to put people on the spot more often…

It was a truly excellent and entertaining show that was a real testament to Erin, Stacey and Sean. We look forward to keeping the momentum up with our thoughts already turning to our next shows. Once more, well done all round!
