Key Stage 4

At KS4 we offer the Cambridge National IT Level 2 qualification. The qualification will encourage independence, creativity and awareness of the I.T. and digital media sector. There are 2 units of coursework; R060: Data manipulation using spreadsheets and R070: Using Augmented Reality to present information and 1 exam; R050: IT in the digital world. The coursework has a weighting of 30% each and the exam has a weighting of 40%.

Each unit covers:

R050: IT in the digital world This is assessed by taking an exam. In this unit you will learn about design and testing concepts for creating an IT solution or product, and the uses of IT in the digital world. Topics include: o Design Tools o Human Computer Interface (HCI) in everyday life o Data and testing o Cyber-security and legislation o Digital Communications o Internet of Everything (IoE).

R060: Data manipulation using spreadsheets This is assessed by completing a set assignment. In this unit you will learn how to plan, design, create, test and evaluate a data manipulation spreadsheet solution to meet client’s requirements. You will be able to evaluate your solution based on the user requirements. Topics include: o Planning and designing the spreadsheet solution o Creating the spreadsheet solution o Testing the spreadsheet solution o Evaluating the spreadsheet solution.

R070: Using Augmented Reality to present information This is assessed by completing a set assignment. In this unit you will learn how to design, create, test and review an Augmented Reality model prototype to meet a client’s requirements. Topics include: o Augmented Reality (AR) o Designing an Augmented Reality (AR) model prototype o Creating an Augmented Reality (AR) model prototype o Testing and reviewing.

Key Stage 5

Level 3 Cambridge Technicals in IT

Year 12: The Level 3 Cambridge Technical Certificate in IT currently contains 2 externally assessed units:

Unit 1 – Fundamentals of IT

UNIT AIM: A sound understanding of IT technologies and practices is essential for IT professionals. Information learnt in this unit will provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of hardware, networks, software, the ethical use of computers and how business uses IT.

After completing this unit, the knowledge, skills and understanding you have developed will underpin your study for the additional units.

  • 90glh unit
  • 1 hour 30 minutes exam
  • 80 marks
  • Part A – approx. 18-20% multiple choice. Part B short answer questions (no more than 10 marks per question)
  • Available in both January and June series
  • It will be paper based

LO weightings:

  • LO1 10-20%
  • LO2 10-20%
  • LO3 25-35%
  • LO4 5-15%
  • LO5 10-20%

Unit 2 – Global Information

UNIT AIM: The purpose of this unit is to demonstrate the uses of information in the public domain, globally, in the cloud and across the internet, by individuals and organisations. You will discover that good management of both data and information is essential, and that it can give any organisation a competitive edge.

This unit will provide you with a greater understanding of how organisations use information sources both internally and externally and the types of information you will encounter. The skills gained by completing this unit will give you knowledge of the functionality of information and how data is stored and processed by organisations. You will also learn about how individuals use information of various types.

This unit will help you to understand the legislation and regulation governing information that flows into and out of an organisation and the constraints and limitations that apply to it. You will also learn the relationship between data and information. Knowledge gained in the study of this unit will also help prepare you for relevant industry qualifications such as VM Ware

  • 90glh unit
  • 1 hour 30 minutes exam
  • 80 marks
  • Part A short-answer questions based on pre-release research brief (42 marks). Part B short-answer questions not based on the case study (38 marks). ( Maximum 10 marks per question)
  • Pre-release approx. 6-8 weeks prior to the exam.
  • A clean copy of this pre-release material will be given to learners with the question paper (no notes)
  • Available in both January and June series
  • It will be paper based

Year 13:

In year 13 the students can resit exams they complete one externally assessed unit and two units of  coursework that is moderated.

UNIT 3: Cyber security

The need for secure digital systems is more crucial than ever before. We rely on computerised systems and networks to collect, process, store and transfer vast amounts of data and to control critical systems such as water and power supplies. Business and ecommerce can be undertaken twenty four hours a day, seven days a week and telecommunications enable us to keep in touch with family and friends and collaborate with colleagues at any time. Mobile devices offer us freedom and flexibility of where and how we learn and work. However, for all the advantages that these systems offer us, some people have found ways to exploit them and this poses a threat to our safety and security in the real world, as much as in the cyber world. To deal with this problem the cyber security industry is expanding at a rapid rate.

This unit has been designed to enable you to gain knowledge and understanding of the range of threats, vulnerabilities and risks that impact on both individuals and organisations. You will learn about the solutions that can be used to prevent or deal with cyber security incidents resulting from these challenges. You will be able to apply your knowledge and understanding of cyber security issues and solutions by reviewing and making recommendations for ways to best protect digital systems and information.

Unit 8: Project management

This unit will provide you with the opportunity to understand and use various project planning skills and techniques, thereby enabling you to become more effective in the workplace.

The key to any project being a success is the planning that takes place. Project management skills are essential transferrable skills that can be used for all IT related projects whether it’s traditional methodologies or more recently adapted agile approaches within the IT development environment. These skills can be adapted and used even on the smallest ‘tasks’ during the planning and implementation stages.

Regardless of your job role, you will often be called upon to participate in projects for a variety of reasons; consequently, this unit is optional within all four of the specialist pathways. This unit will assist you in developing your skills, knowledge and understanding of different project methodologies and the key factors that can influence the success or failure of a project.

Knowledge gained in the study of this unit will also help prepare you for relevant industry qualifications such as CompTIA Project+.

UNIT 17: Internet of Everything

This unit is about the use of the internet and how it is impacting people and society. You will learn about the Internet of Everything (IoE) and how it is used. Using your knowledge you will carry out a feasibility study for a potential idea. You will pitch your idea to potential stakeholders and use their feedback to revise your proposal.

This unit is an optional unit in the Extended Certificate and all of the specialist pathways in the Diploma suite, as the Internet of Everything is everywhere. The Internet of Everything is expanding, appearing in all of the everyday devices found in homes, businesses and cities.
