Our House Names

After an enormous amount of debate, we have come up with five names for our new houses.  In keeping with our status as a specialist arts college, we decided upon five names which represent each of the five disciplines of ‘the arts’ that we teach here at Kingswood.  We did not want to go for the obvious, but we did want to choose the names of five people who were ‘ground-breakers’ in their particular field.

Aardman

Named after Aardman Animations, the creators of Wallace & Gromit, Creature Comforts and many more.  Led by Nick Park, Aardman Animations have been ‘ground-breakers’ in terms of animation for a number of years, as well as winning many awards for their work.

Bourne

Named after Matthew Bourne – widely hailed as the UK’s most popular and successful Choreographer/Director.  He is the creator of the world’s longest running ballet production, a five-time Olivier Award winner, and the only British director to have won the Best Direction of a Musical and Best Choreography.

Glennie

Named after Dame Evelyn Glennie, the Scottish virtuoso percussionist.  Evelyn Glennie has been profoundly deaf since she was 12 years old, but this does not inhibit her ability to perform at international level.  Together with a number of others, she was responsible for the foundation of the Music in Education Consortium which helped bring millions of pounds into music education.

Hepworth

Named after Dame Barbara Hepworth, an English sculptor of world-wide renown, who helped develop modern art, and sculpture in particular, a great deal during her lifetime.  Her works are displayed all over the world from the Yorkshire Sculpture Park to the United Nations Building in New York.  She was made a Dame in recognition of her contribution to art 1965.

Littlewood

Named after Joan Littlewood, a pioneering theatre director and writer, sometimes called the ‘Mother of Modern Theatre’.  She was one of the first to bring the work of Bertolt Brecht to the English stage at the theatre she had established, the Theatre Royal in Stratford in the East End of London.
