GCSE Results 2016

Pupils are celebrating after receiving their results for their GCSE or equivalent courses of study

Results are significantly improved on last year and for the first time the academy is above the new floor standard by which school performance is measured.

In previous years all schools’ and academies’ examination results were measured on how many pupils achieved five GCSEs at grades A*-C including English and mathematics. From this year all pupils, schools and academies are measured on how much progress their pupils make from their achievement at Key Stage 2 in Year 6 to when they complete their exams at the end of Year 11. This is known as Progress 8 and was designed to encourage all pupils to study a broad and balanced curriculum. The Progress 8 measure is based on pupils’ progress measured across eight subjects and is a comparison of their progress against the progress of all other students nationally. As the results of all pupils need to be analysed to calculate this measure this headline figure will not be available from the DfE until Late September.

However, early indications show that the Progress 8 measure for the academy is -0.28 which is a significant improvement on the -0.64 result last year and above the floor standard which is -0.5.

Whilst all the pupils have done well, there are seven that have particular cause to celebrate after securing all A*, A and B grades (or equivalent), they include:

  • Kieron Dodge achieved five A* grades and four A grades.

  • Annie-May Ball achieved six A grades and three B grades.

  • Ben Porter achieved five A grades and three B grades.

  • Erin Gibbons achieved three A grades and six B grades.

  • Advone Katsande achieved an A* grade, a Distinction*, three A grades, four B grades and a Merit.

Andy Burton, Principal, said: “After a fitful night’s sleep I am delighted to say that the Kingswood Secondary Academy is celebrating some markedly improved results compared to last year.  Across at least eight Government approved and rigorous subjects students are achieving better results and making better progress given their starting points: this is a real good news story. Performance is now judged according to the Progress 8 measure with a floor standard of -0.5.  For the first time the academy is performing above this floor standard, and significantly so. Provisional results show a score of -0.28 compared to last year’s disappointing -0.64. The number of students achieving a good pass in English and mathematics has also increased compared to last year.

“I am so very proud of our students who worked hard, ably supported by the dedicated staff I am privileged to lead and the support of the Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust.  I must also thank our parents who have encouraged their sons and daughters through a stressful exam period and helped them to achieve so well.

“Whilst being pleased we are not complacent and know there is much still to do, but these results, sitting alongside our improved A-Level results, support the fact that the Kingswood Academy is ‘on-the-up’ as we continue on our improvement journey.
