Kingswood Secondary Academy

Ofsted Good

Open Evening

Our annual Open Evening for prospective students and their parents/carers took place on Wednesday 8th October 2014. Despite the torrential rain, it was a very busy evening with all sort of activities going on in every department around the Academy.

As always, we had a huge number of students helping out on the night. Families were met by Sixth Form students at the entrance and other younger students acted as guides for the evening, escorting visitors around the Academy, or were involved in the activities. The students did a fantastic job working with enthusiasm and answering questions that the parents and Year 6 pupils had. Altogether, they made sure they gave a true picture of what it was like here at Kingswood. There were many positive comments from parents about their politeness and helpfulness.

The evening started with presentations by Scott Hudson, Principal, in the Main Hall, before parents dispersed around the Academy to see us in action.

A band played in the Atrium to welcome families as they entered the Academy. In PE, indoor athletics took place in the Sports Hall, with other students showing how to use the equipment in the CV suite.   The Languages Faculty offered the opportunity to use laptops and play games. There were displays of students’ creative work in Art, and families could watch auditions for the upcoming production of Oliver Twist in Drama. Dance demonstrations took place and demonstrations using ‘Green Screen’ and Animations were in Media. Families visited our ICT suites and in the Maths Faculty there was a Maths competition and the opportunity to play games to show how we make learning the subject as much fun as possible. In Humanities, there were quizzes, religious artifacts and interactive games and in English there were more games and quizzes and displays of resources and examples of work. The Design and Technology department showed how diverse the subject is with demonstrations of cooking, textile     design, resistant materials and the latest CAD/Cam equipment. There were many displays in the Science Faculty offering lots of fun practical things for our visitors to get involved with.

Throughout the evening, staff from every faculty were on hand to answer any questions that parents or youngsters had.

Next week, we are holding Open Days on Tuesday 14th and Thursday 16th October for Year 6  prospective students and their parents to look around the school. Anyone interested should contact the Academy on 01536 741857 to arrange the details. Tours of the Academy will take place at 11.15 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. on both days.
